hey uhhhhh how do you find new music?

maybe i need to start trying to go to local shows again like i did as a kid....

@xan i live with multiple girlfriends! and they do show me music, for sure! but none of it really "sticks" with me

@exiliaex I'm all out of ideas because dating girls is the only way I acquire new music 😭

@exiliaex
it's simply not possible (ask a friend for recs or sacrifice your soul to an algorithm thingy like Spotify)

@kelsey ive hated algorithmic music reccs since i was a kid in school discovering Pandora for the first time

@exiliaex well what kind of music are you into? if it's any of the kinds i like maybe i can slip u some

@kelsey@goto.tomato.pink @exiliaex@masto.anarch.cc things have been dire since my favorite music blog (sounds better with reverb) shut down

also there's the radio if you're really hardcore

@exiliaex i like scrolling bandcamp genres and listening to anything that catches my eye. i also like browsing peoples libraries on soulseek. theres also just. so many compilations. especially good if you wanna find obscure old shit. like theres so many diy punk/proto-punk bands from the 70s and 80s that only managed to record one EP with nothing but bangers and contributed 1 song 2 a comp b4 breaking up never 2b seen again. also if u do magic on ur yt alg it'll show 7 view vids of ppl w guitars

@exiliaex some times i just search for random stuff but usually hearing about stuff from other people is the best way to go about it

@exiliaex On here, try following the NowPlaying hashtag. Aside from directly listing tracks, it should lead you to people who are passionate about music.

Also, I have a subscription to Tidal, arguably the least bad of streaming services, and it occasionally recommends something new to me.

@exiliaex I don't know, and I'm following for ideas. (I also hate algorithmic music recommendations - and I'm certainly not subscribing to Tidal... - so I tend to just encounter stuff ambiently and then try to remember who did it.)

@aoanla i saw people talking about browsing soulseek - i may give that a try

@exiliaex it's pretty basic, but for me it's been a mix of scrolling through bandcamp, subscribing to youtube channels of people posting their favourite music (discovered a decent amount of indie rock that way) and going to local shows when I can afford it

spotify used to work for me when my account was fresh, but then it became stale - pretty much like "we see you like alternative rock and metal, so here's a deep cut: The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails"

@exiliaex
Here on mastodon I subscribed to the #progressivemetal tag and let the recs roll in. Play em in the background while I'm working.

My rule is that any artist that makes me stop and focus on the music for a second is worth looking at other songs by.

@exiliaex aside from subscribing to music youtubers and channels of labels and stuff i also on a discord server of smol composer youtuber who reacts to and analyses music, and people share music there all the time of all sorts of genres

@exiliaex
Over time i have constituted a list of web radio urls i like from all over the world that provide current track metadata. So when something catches my ear i just need to look up it's name and go search it on soulseek.
