You need to understand: the average American’s psychological state around sex is indistinguishable from that of a frightened Spanish peasant during the Inquisition
Everything is sexual and nothing is supposed to be. They believe sex jokes are Satan putting his dick in your kids’ ear. They believe nudity alone is mind rape. Sexual innuendo or reference might as well be molestation.
This is also the country where grown men take their daughters to “purity balls” where they slow dance together all night and talk about sexual preservation and making sure you dont break your hymen and become a whore until god has given you a man who will treat you right by isolating you and forcing you to live as a housewife in honor of god.
This country is going to unironically look like the fucking Scarlet Letter if we don’t seriously push back against moral panic induced sexual psychosis.
@DemonMama DAMN, Demon Mama back at it again with the scathing but totally accurate takes. I am here for ittttt
@DemonMama
I know you've mentioned growing up mostly in a crazy kinda church environment. Did y'all do purity rings/pledges? Church I went to in my teens made a whole deal of the youth group (guys and girls) getting rings and promising God to "save ourselves" for marriage. Ya know, to remain pure for our future spouses. Looking back I just kinda laugh at how dumb and performative it all was. Outside of maybe preventing as many teen pregnancies from happening it is also a kinda useless idea.
@CyberWolf1013 the purity rings/pledges hadn't become popular in the cult I was in by the time I had left. There were many similar things, oaths and vows to god and the like. Purity culture was deeply entrenched in the rest of the practices of the church. Its very possible the rings and pledges themselves became popular after I had left.
@CyberWolf1013 @DemonMama
I remember this. I never had to do it because I had already kinda fucked off before this became a thing at my church, but I remember all my friends and shit getting them thinking it was the oddest thing, even being fully indoctrinated at that time.
@3lbca @DemonMama I never questioned it or much of anything in the Bible. I was a good little Christian way up until... pfft... probably my Jr/Sr year of high school. When I started getting into Bible/Christian history is when I started questioning. I learned more about the Bible after that than I ever did sitting in Sunday school.
Yeah for me being stuck in the same kinda places my whole life I didn’t really think about anything else until like 15-16 and from there I went on a bit of a journey through a few different religions and finally decided that it’s all bullshit lol.
But that took like 10+ years for me to come to that final realization. And it doesn’t mean that other parts of my life aren’t still effected by the experiences growing up but I try.
@DemonMama
I have a very... Uh... Explicit but hilarious meme I want to share that this made me think of. It's a literal dick on a trolley but it's detailed. Lol. Let me know if it's okay for me to send it to you.
@DemonMama To say they are "average Americans" is to overestimate their percentage of the overall population. They're a statistical minority, but they do exercise an outsized influence.
@alexapagliuca This is true to a degree but also its not just conservatives that have american sexual psychosis. lots of otherwise progressive and chill people have digested an incredibly unhealthy relationship with sex as a result of the christian cultural hegemony
@DemonMama It's also true that Christian hegemony has imparted an unhealthy attitude and relationship toward sex, but conflating the majority with the minority you're describing is a bad idea. It encourages a solidarity among them.
@alexapagliuca @DemonMama their influence is beyond global.. remember, they're a very powerful and very loud minority. The Weimar republic underestimated the Nazis.
@KomradeKemet @DemonMama Agreed. There is a reason they use the rhetorical tool that is presenting themselves as the majority though too, and it's not the best idea to play into that. Differentiating their power from their size is important.
@DemonMama you're wrong about something here. They aren't freaking out about hetero couples, not yet anyways..
They're almost exclusively going balls deep into the discourse against anything that isn't heteronormative.
* No conservatives are speaking out against taking your kid to hooters.
* No conservatives are speaking out against "purity balls".
* No conservatives are freaking out about a Disney princess making out with a Disney prince.
It's not that they want the media to be completely sanitized of sexuality or nudity. They want THE RIGHT KIND OF PEOPLE to express their sexuality.
I live in a Muslim-majority country and yes, they're really weird about sex too.. believe it or not, we still have honor killings. But you know what's really super duper odd?
I noticed that the homophobia here got way way way worse in these past years after the recent wave of homophobia in the west, especially Florida. Even seen Matt Walch and Fox news cited a lot by random twitter MENA users. These christofascist pieces of shit are influencing the global south and not in a good way.
The right's reach is as far worse than you think it is, and I'm not sure how bad it can get. Russia for example has already jumped on the bandwagon with their "anti LGBTQ propaganda law", Qatar famously did as well during the WorldCup..
@DemonMama
America? I thought you were talking about Afghanistan 👀
@partnumber2 Sucks but that's how it is here. If you grow up in a rural red area especially. Americans are fuckin NUTS when it comes to sex
@DemonMama and at the same time think baby tiaras are a-okay. Shit is wild in the Bible belt
