thinking about the possibility of reworking my old essay on the showa emperor of japan and exploring the issue of his culpability for japanese war crimes in ww2. would be an eventual future project.

incredibly defeating to work on extended researched videos just to get called a pedophile by a huge swarm of conservatives. it's an insane amount of work for almost zero payoff. no idea how long I am for this content creation game to be honest, this break was supposed to be fulfilling but it's just teaching me how little opportunity there is in this game. guess I'll keep trying but idk.

My hope is that if I make enough smart, well-crafted material about things I actually care about that isn't built on drama, then people will eventually gravitate towards it and my community can be a space that prioritizes those things. But for now it seems like leftist infighting and frequent uploads gets you the numbers, so it's going to be an effort to turn that around. But I want to, because I want that for myself and for my community. I just don't know how to get there.

NEW VIDEO! It's a very important day for us as we're dressing down Tim Pool's disgusting attempt to lie to Emma Vigeland and to his audience on his show. This one was a bit of work and required me to put my nose to the grindstone again. I hope everybody enjoys it, because along the way I found that it mattered to me a lot that people understood what happened in that conversation.

tomorrow's video's mission statement:

-spread the truth about zucker
-vindicate trans commentators and community members who have been beating this drum for years
-call into question rhetoric around desistance
-vindicate cisgender allies who have rallied to defend trans youth
-make sure everyone knows leelah alcorn's story

it's become about more than correcting tim pool. I set out to do that but it's bigger now. it's about us. be there 2pm CST.

"I just think, you know, studies have shown that if you're a high value man, like 95 to 99th percentile, your value on the sexual marketplace trades better over time, you know, whereas women peak at 18 and fall off at 23, they hit the wall. No man really wants a woman like that."

still thinking about what the last video essay to round out august will be. got the blade essay, the skyrim/elden ring tutorial design analysis essay, the (surprise) patron essay and the wi spa essay. just need one more thing.

Honestly, I think this JustPearlyThings essay response is so cathartic to write because it allows me to lean in heavily to rhetorical analysis, which ended up being a big part of some of my time in academia and feels like the kind of thing at least a subset of viewers will enjoy.

gonna record the tim pool essay and have it edited and scheduled tonight. then hopefully finish writing up the justpearlythings response and this month's patron video, to be recorded tomorrow and the day after. that'll free me up to finish other projects this month, hopefully.

I can't imagine the JustPearlyThings response will get a ton of attention on my channel, but I wish it would because (1) it's taken a lot of effort to research and (2) I think more needs to be done to defend against rhetoric that is harmful to women and girls.

oh, and I got to use that Sartre quote in a really satisfying way for the justpearlythings video, so hopefully people will enjoy that one. kinda controversial but also kinda not.

still gotta record this one and the wi spa essay. also gotta finish writing the justpearlythings and keith woods essays. hoping to hear back through email from contacts I'd like to interview for the magic the gathering raceswapping video.

Show thread

finished the tim pool essay. was about four times longer than I had intended it to be but it'll probably make for more satisfying watching/listening this way.

One difficulty of being a creative is that creators are dependent on their social spaces, and those spaces can be not just very cliquey and exclusive but also very antagonist, rewarding conformity over strong ideas. This produces environments that can feel very toxic to writers.

Some other ideas:

-Home Alone: Lost on Little Saint James
-Madea's Hanukkah
-Santa Claus vs. Dracula
-365 Dalmatians: A Christmas Tail
-Let's Fuck Krampus
-Die Harder
-Heavenly Piece: Santa's Shootout
-How the Grinch Made COVID

Show thread

Alright, while we're still in summer I need everyone to note that Christmas movies are required to be insane this year. I need directors this year to bring a certain kind of "How the Grinch Did 9/11" type vibe to Christmas.

NEW VIDEO! My essay about iilluminaughtii, Brian Deer, hbomberguy and YouTube plagiarism is finally up! In it, I fact-check hbomb to see if he was fair to iilluminaughtii, I check with her work for any important mistakes and ask what we can all learn from this.

Tomorrow kicks off a great series of video essays on my channel this month, premiering every Friday! I like to think I've stepped up the thumbnail game a bit for some of these.

by far the most annoying part of the video essay writing process is watching through parts of a video another time to transcribe the parts I want to cite in the essay word for word
