i wanna develop a set of practices i can apply to the plants i find to determine what properties are imbued in them

what i mean is - learning plant identification is obviously useful. but i want to develop a set of reproducible practices which can be passed down, separate from any knowledge of a plant, to safely learn what the plant would be useful for.

That's actually pretty tough to think about ... You can't really rely on phenotypical characteristics a lot of the time, since some plants can have a really similar phenotype but entirely different properties. Also a lot of the times, different parts of a plant can be used for different things, and sometimes even some parts are safe to consume while others are poisonous. And I'm guessing you want to avoid having to test the plants on humans or animals if you can avoid it.
That is a very fascinating and difficult subject.
I'll be curious to know what you can come up with.
