what’s the uh, what’s the viability of having a private account on mastodon. is that a thing people do. is that worth doing. is it -secure?-

@roundtit it depends on what you want to use it for, tbh. as far as i can tell its pretty secure! but im still trying to learn more

@exiliaex probably the same thing i use my twitter private for, posting selfies and whining 😵‍💫

@exiliaex i just don’t trust twitter to uh. remain a viable spot to keep doin that for much longer, so i’m looking to fill that niche elsewhere

@roundtit @exiliaex i think fedi is fine for private accounts but you do have to keep shit tight cuz of shitty actors having the ability to get more power here by running instances and shit. for example i post tits on my private cohost cuz its its own platform, a sealed little pod for me and the sluts.

@sadie @roundtit i will double check privacy stuff so i can be confident in speaking on exactly how it works (especially since i plan on updating our instance to one that has even more kinds of privacy settings i.e. being able to have local-only posts and things of that nature)

as the admin of this instance i technically have the ability to like, read everything posted on the instance, including DMs. it's not something i know how to do right now, and its not really something i'm planning on learning how to do because this is a server for my friends. but, yknow, just wanna be upfront about what power i have here wrt privacy.

but, keep in mind that *other* admins will be able to read what is sent to their instance, (like if you DM someone on their instance) even if it's private.

@exiliaex @roundtit yeah i pretty much treat fedi like an imageboard (lol) where like, if people want to find it they can, its in there somewhere in the mash of garbage. its the one thing where focused centralized systems like cohost have a leg up, users dont matter to the staff in control and they have a lot of responsibilities to do things right, where here we're just a bunch of social groups networking with varying standards, so i treat this space as semi-public to public at all times

if you want tho you can find software built on this stuff that runs just non-federating local spaces, and those are valid
