"The expectation of scaling up is not limited to science. Progress itself has often been defined by its ability to make projects expand without changing their framing assumptions. This quality is “scalability.” The term is a bit confusing, because it could be interpreted to mean “able to be discussed in terms of scale.” Both scalable and nonscalable projects, however, can be discussed in relation to scale. When Fernand Braudel explained history’s “long durée” or Niels Bohr showed us the quantum atom, these were not projects of scalability, although they each revolutionized thinking about scale. Scalability, in contrast, is the ability of a project to change scales smoothly without any change in project frames. A scalable business, for example, does not change its organization as it expands. This is possible only if business relations are not transformative, changing the business as new relations are added. Similarly, a scalable research project admits only data that already fit the research frame. Scalability requires that project elements be oblivious to the indeterminacies of encounter; that’s how they allow smooth expansion.

The excessive heat warnings across the country today, and the people relying on Twitter to get information cooling centers, free water, etc.
If you run a social media account for an elected/agency, please bring up to your bosses that now is the time to start building up your platforms outside of Twitter too.

The fedi (and online in any way unless you PERSONALLY know the people you’re engaged with and can trust them with your life, you are *only* using E2EE and not on surface web, etc) is NOT a place for actions or serious plans for them beyond those that have legal safe harbor for now (e.g. electioneering/voting/running for office, planned peaceful protest, boycotts, complaints, lawsuits, nonviolent strikes/labor organizing, malicious compliance, and the like)
And if those particular ones are criminalized - shut up about them too.
Online is a place for words, theories, being your full self, exposing harm being done - lots of things in our lives, but not for getting other people in trouble because you want to be both the mouth and the hand.

it's cool to see twitter breaking a major function of cross-platform info sharing by killing off-site embeds in exactly the same way google did by killing reader, the same way apple did by killing flash
the enemy of all infrastructural stability online is the corporation's irrational hunger for profit at all costs. just because the head of today's dragon is a fucking court jester doesn't change the fact that this will only keep happening as long as the web is a playground for venture capital

My greatest advice to those concerned: Start archiving. If you come across something you believe is valuable: make a copy.
If you follow a guide on how to install and configure software and you found it helpful: make a copy.
If you come across a video you really enjoy and find yourself coming back to again and again: make a copy.
If it means anything to you: make a copy, or you'll wish you did.
